| This is a list of the occupiers of every house in Brandon in 1674 and a count of the number of hearths each of their properties contained. Even the names of those exempt from paying through poverty are given. In 1662 King Charles II needed money. He persuaded parliament to grant a tax of 2s a year on every hearth in the country payable by the occupier. The local constables were tasked with collecting this tax but their efforts were deemed unsatisfactory so officers of the King were appointed as tax collectors. It was a much resented tax and many attempted to evade it by concealing hearths or falsifying returns, and in some cases by stoning the chimney-men who came to collect the tax. The tax was eventually done away with by William III in 1689. The original returns were to be kept in the county but a transcript was sent to the Court of Exchequer (now held at the Public Record Office) |
